who hath preserved us from our birth
for present joys, for blessings past,
and for the hope of heaven at last.”

Something else that I did this week: introduced two of my favorite teachers to one another. Mr. Burleigh unexpectedly came into my jewelry class on thursday to deliver something to me and got to meet my super-cool jewelry teacher, Chris Hill. This blurry photograph is proof of these two worlds colliding. (It is also proof of how much Amanda and I enjoyed this red-letter experience.)

What I did this week (16 nov 2012)

  • Discussed Incognegro in my comic book class. I thought it was atrocious and I told my teacher so. Understandably, this made for a slightly uncomfortable class period.
  • Got out of marketing after only 45 minutes. Ready to be done with that class for good.
  • Started working on a new project for my ad class while simultaneously continuing on the old one, which I’m doing on WD-40 and which I am pretty bored of.
  • Turned in some of my worst copywriting homework ever: ads employing verbal metaphor. Mr. Felton graded it generously and wrote “you’ll live to fight another day”.
  • Made a bunch of jump rings in jewelry. I’m making good progress on a necklace project.
  • Finished making a handful of extra-special bow ties to sell at a pop-up store later this semester. At a meeting on wednesday night, Mr. Mohr bought one of my ties right then and there. Pretty great!
  • Worked off-and-on all week on this darn WD-40 project. Finals are due next tuesday.
  • Had a really really fun time in copywriting on thursday making up “testimonial” ads in class.
  • Left jewelry really early to go on a road trip to Detroit to see the Magnetic Fields. (More on that later.)
  • Followed up on my Internship Fair leads and had an interview on friday. KILLED IT.

What I did this week (9 nov 2012)

  • Drove all the way to school monday morning and realized I’d left my package design final at home. So I turned around and went to get it at 7:50am. Rush hour torment.
  • Turned in my package design final and had a crit. It went better than I was expecting, considering the embarrassingly poor craftsmanship on my final.
  • Butted heads with my “literary studies of comics” teacher. The ideological antagonism is becoming less and less bearable.
  • Stayed late after marketing on monday night to finish a video group project. If all goes well, I shouldn’t have to turn in anything else for the class.
  • Drove to school on wednesday night for a 9:30pm meeting. It was kinda fun to see all my friends late at night.
  • Turned in ad finals (our second project of the semester). Looked at everyone’s finals and wrote comments on papers. The comments were largely worthless.
  • Got a ton of work done in jewelry. I bezel-set three pieces of jade. Also I helped Amanda with her bezel-setting. I’m getting pretty good at soldering.
  • Learned how to use the hydraulic die forming machine.
  • Printed out a bunch of résumés and examples of my work and talked to companies at the Internship Fair on friday. Very thankful to be done with that.

What I did this week (2 nov 2012)

  • Called off my monday independent study meeting for fear of not having made enough progress. (It was a good call.)
  • Started getting sick on monday and was sick for the rest of the week.
  • Stayed late after Marketing to film a short, low-key video for our group project. We shot it in the admissions meeting room and had some fun with staging.
  • Lost my hat on Cleveland Avenue in monday’s Hurricane Sandy weather. Had to chase after it.
  • Worked really hard to create color comps for my ad class.
  • Made some rivets in my jewelry class, including one my teacher said was the best in the class.
  • Redid my ad concept, rendering my hours of comp work pretty much worthless. That’s how she goes.
  • Tried to finish my package design final and failed miserably. It is probably the clumsiest-looking thing I have created in all of college.

What I did this week (26 oct 2012)

  • Had an offsite friendship lunch which was an extremely nice change-of-pace.
  • Enjoyed another productive, encouraging independent study meeting. Concerning my color palette and page wireframe, Lutz said “I think you’re done!” That .
  • Stayed late after Marketing to work on our “team project”. We took about an hour and finished the whole thing.
  • On tuesday (my birthday), brought frosted sugar cookies to school. Gave a special sprinkle-laden cookie to John, my birthday twin.
  • Finished my first bezel-set ring. Polished it repeatedly.
  • Tracked down CCAD’s chair of Fashion Design and got signed into two fashion classes for next semester. A real boon!
  • After jewelry, went to the North Market for some delicious Polish food with Jason and Amanda. They paid for my meal! and the woman serving us gave me a free extra birthday-portion!
  • Drove to school at 9:30pm for a super-late meeting about a pop-up store thing that will be materializing later this semester. I did it mostly for M-Tabs. More on that as things unfold.
  • On thursday, made actual progress in ad class. We are supposed to generate ad comps over the weekend.
  • Had a nice, reassuring conversation with Mr. Felton about my copywriting skills.
